New Guidelines for Coding HFpEF and HFrEF

AHA Coding Clinic® for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS has reconsidered the coding of terms HFpEF or HFrEF when documented by the provider. This is effective with March 18, 2016 discharges. These terms are more contemporary and being used more often.

HFpEF

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (diastolic heart failure)

HFrEF

Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (systolic heart failure)

May also be referred to heart failure with low ejection fraction or heart failure with reduced systolic function.

This is great news for coders and should reduce the number of queries or number of unspecified heart failure codes assigned at the facility you code for.
